Getting Started

Welcome to our Lit 6 blog! This is our place to share our thoughts, ideas, and wonderings about our literacy initiatives at Concord. I've got the blog set up, now it's up to YOU to get the conversation started. So, what will it be? WORD? Ideas to share with principals? Great recipes for the holidays? You decide.....

  2. Oh wow! I did get it to work!

OK, I think the reason I'm feeling so uncertain with this whole WORD thing is because we don't really know what all is included in WORD work. Is it spelling, phonics, grammar, spelling, vocabulary? Those are all very different topics. Maybe we should start with a definition of WORD like we did for guided reading.

  3. You do realize that I am a beby-blogger and this could put me over the edge!
Jenn, I agree that first we must determine what WORD is and then we can put our thoughts all together. I can't wait to hear from our deep thinker, Ellen!

  4. Agreed. We do need a definition.

F & P say, "Word study is not so much about learning individual words as it is about learning how written language is organized - how written language 'works.'" They also go on to mention that phonics, spelling and vocabulary are parts of word study.

This is a HUGE topic to address....and I feel overwhelmed even thinking about where to start. Anyone?

  6. When considering Word Work in the classroom, having students practice spelling their words kinesthetically and visually is an effective strategy to support moving the correct spelling into their long-term memory. Word Work is not a spelling program; it is merely the time to practice spelling words. Word Work as part of the Daily 5 is a way to have children practice words, so your spelling, sight word and phonics programs can be infused into the rotation without much effort. Other than deciding what words, how to make them meaningful as well as useful.

  7. Oops, that last post should have included... I recognize that when I say without much effort that there is mega amounts of effort put into determining what words, how to make them meaningful and useful. Remember, no attacks on this baby blogger!

  8. So how much IDR time is OK to spend on spelling practice? (We all know what this turns into... 3x/each, word-searches, etc.)
